Dear class,
We have been doing a terrific job reading "The Outsiders". We finished chapter1. We have seen how the setting of the sixties is so important to understand the novel. We also have seen how the language of the novel is so specific and important. As we have see gang culture is another main feature of this book. Now, I want to ask you the following. Which two gangs are rivals in the novel? Which are their characteristics ? Which are their differences and similarities? Which characters belong to each gang?
When you answer remember to provide evidence from the text also remember today's lesson: When you compare you look for similarities. When you contrast you look for differences.
I can't wait to read your comments!
The greaser and the Socs are both gangs. The greaser are poorer than Socs. They are poorer than the middle class. They are working class. They life in the east side. I got all that information on page 2. by Relnaldo
ReplyDeleteThe greasers are poorer than the middle class. They are poorer than the Socs. They are both gangs. They are enemies. I learn this information on page 2

ReplyDeleteToday I learn that the Greasers are poorer than the Socs. Both are gangs.
ReplyDeleteBy : Jangelis and Francelys.
There is certainly more information to learn from both groups.
DeleteGood work but still you need to re-read your comments to avoid minor mistakes(well, some not so minors!).
ReplyDeleteThe computer can be a good teaching tool because it can correct your spelling and grammar but the best way is to read what you write.
let's keep practicing.
Another important advice.Read the instructions by reading all the questions and answering them, you will write more.
ReplyDeleteAlso go back to your writing journal. We did this morning a Venn diagram comparing the two gangs. In that diagram you have plenty of information to answer my questions. Use it!
Dear teacher,
ReplyDeleteThe two gangs that are rival are the Greasers and the Socs.
Ponyboy is member of the Greaser.

Ciro,

Dear Wilton,
DeleteYou are very smart! It is better to take our group identity from good associations like a school or a class.
Dear Wilton,Omar, and Ciro,
ReplyDeleteDo you see the wonders of reading and writing! Now, all the rules make sense and come to life. We have many things to master but I think this blog will help us to get engaged and motivated. I think it will help you to focus and monitor your reading and understanding. Compare and Contrast is an important skill that good readers use. Think in all the things we can compare, not only the different gangs but also the sixties with out time. the different characters and later different authors and books.
Santiago
uh! our time
ReplyDeleteDear Teacher,
ReplyDeleteThe two gangs in the novel are the Greasers and the Socs, the Socs are rich kids but the Greasers are poorer than the Socs and the middle class the Greasers live in the East side and the Socs in the West side.
I am reading in chapter two that the two gangs go to different drive in.
PonyBoy is a member of the Greasers
By:Adrian From 821
Adrian, Drive-ins were outdoors movies very popular during the sixties. That is another example of features from that decade.
DeleteDear Teacher,
ReplyDeleteThe two gangs in the novel even go to different places. It looks that they are very territorials. You can get in trouble if you go to the wrong place.
By:Wilton from 821
Can you imagine Winston if you are unaware of the different territories and you go to the wrong place! I don't even want to imagine! Let's keep reading to see what will happen in this somber, interesting novel.
DeleteDear Teacher,
ReplyDeleteI like this book because is very real.Sadly the book is very real
By ciro from 821
I am so glad Ciro that you like this book. I see that you are improving your reading and becoming motivated. Keep reading the more you read the better you will get at it.
DeleteIt is a good thing that you found how realistic this book is. When you write try not to repeat the same word twice. A thesaurus is a good tool to find synonyms. You can even do it on line. Next time write more!
The greasers and the socs are both gangs. The greasers are poorer than the socs. They are also poorer then the middle class. The greasers live in East Side.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, the socs are the jet set kids. They are richer than the greasers .They can be wild. They live on the West Side.Socs is an abbreviation of social.
By Greulys from 821
Greulys,
DeleteGood use of the expression: on the other hand. This is a good way to contrast something keep using it.
They are two gangs in the novel and they live in different places. That show me that they are very territorials.

You mean: "There are"
DeleteDear Teacher,
ReplyDeletei'm enjoying reading the book "outsiders" because it has a real life event, right now they are many violence in the streets with the gangs and to many killing.
rosiel 821
Yes, this book is very realistic. Things are much better now. But sadly violence is a reality of many communities in our country and around the world. Let's see how Ponyboy learns that violence is not the way.
DeleteNow, Rosiel I want you to be more careful when you publish a post. Please, always begin with capital letter. The pronoun I is always capitalized and you forgot the s (Because it is plural)in your last word.
The Greasers and the Socs are both gangs. The Greasers are poorer than the Socs and than the middle class.Ponyboy is a member of the Greasers.
ReplyDeleteBy Jarlyn and Angelina from 821
Dear Jarlyn and Angelina,
DeleteKeep reading this book, you can use the Venn diagrams to compare other characters from the novel. This book has many characters, to understand their actions and motivations will help us to have a better understanding of the plot.
Dear Teacher,
ReplyDeleteThe Greasers are poorer than the Socs. They are also poorer than the middle class. They live on the East Side. The Greasers and the Socs are both gangs. I Thing that the gangs are bad because I could have a bad behavior. I should take my identity from positive groups like my class and school.
By: Ana from 821
Ana,
DeleteI love your use of the word identity. This is one of the themes of the book and one of the essential questions in our new unit.
Keep incorporating new vocabulary in your writing.
The Outsiders
ReplyDeleteThe Outsiders By S.E Hilton,

In this story there two gangs are the Socs and the Greasers. The Socs and Greaser are enemies. I can’t believe that I am reading this difficult book in my ESL class
From: Domingo 821
Yes, Domingo,
ReplyDeleteI remember when you came in September and certainly this novel is more of a challenge than the play Novio by Gary Soto. You are doing great. Keep the hard work.
The greaser and the socs are both gangs. The greasers are poorer than the socs and the middle class. They are working class. They live in the east side. Pony boy is a greaser.(chater2,page1,2)
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand the socs are the abbreviation for the socials. They are the jet set. They live in the West Side. They are the rich kids.
Both groups have in common that they are gangs.
By: Ricaury from 721
Dear Ricaury,
DeleteVery good! This is a seed for a good compare and contrast paragraph, you can see how when we organize information using graphic organizers we get better ideas for our writing.
Next step, we need to work using transitional words.
This story is about two gangs Socs and Greasers. The language on this story is very important because this shows me that there's a lot of gang language on this story. If you read the story in the(scene1;page6) it says "Need a haircut Greaser "That means that he is going to kill him. Dear teacher,I use a Venn diagram to find this information the greaser are poorer them the Socs, both group have in common that they are gangs.by:yerimil class:721
ReplyDeleteDear Yerimil,
ReplyDeleteVenn diagrams are great graphic organizers to compare and contrast information. Venn diagrams also will help you write compare and contrast paragraphs. Keep the hard work!
I’m going to write about Johnny. We learn a lot about Johnny in chapter 3 especially on pages 33 and 34. Johnny physical characteristics are that like all Greaser he has long hair. Johnny personality traits are he had never been a coward (page 34). He was the most law abiding of us. He was badly beater by the Socs, now he is very scared and he will always carry a blade. I know that now he is going to get in trouble.
ReplyDeleteJohnny relationship to the other characters is that he is a member of the Greasers and a friend of Pony Boy. Another relevant information is that he doesn’t come from a happy family (his parents fight all the time, page 33) they also belt him all the time. (Page 33)

He was badly beaten by the socs, now he is very scared and he will always carry a blander. I know that now he is going to get in trouble.
