When we read a story, we as readers always make connections to our text. You asked me what are my connections to this story? Well, I have to tell you that I am very happy and lucky to have both of my parents alive. My connection to this short story was the gardening scene where Mr. Soto described the domesticity and bonding of the family.

So, in "Living up the Street" what he is doing is sharing with us moments about his life and his experiences "growing up". Even in his fiction, like in the play "Novio", I think there are autobiographical moments.

ReplyDeleteOf course "Father" is a tragic story. Look what the writer is doing he is sharing with us the death of his father. This is by its very nature a painful subject but he does superbly avoiding sentimentalism and cheap melodrama. Go back to the text and notice how he convey the event with three simple short sentences.
