The Importance of the Setting

Dear Class,
We are going to see how the setting in this novel is fundamental to understand the story. Therefore, I am going to ask you: Where is the story happening? Which town? Do you think there is a connection between the name of the city and the characters? When is the story happening?
You will see that by understanding the setting and its background you will fully understand this important literary work. As always, I am eager to read your comments.
Your teacher,
S.Namnun-Puigbo

    1. Adolfo,
You need to be more careful with the mechanics, specially when I know that you know that Soledad as a proper noun must be written with capital letter. Also, you forgot the last period. These are serious mistakes that show carelessness in your work.

Thanks for your kind words. In order to achieve excellence in any endeavor; we must practice hard every day. If you want to be a good writer; you need to write every day.
Another thing that you are realizing now is that we write differently when we have an audience. Well, keep writing!

  7. The novel takes places in Soledad (a city in California) near the Salinas river.Actually the book begins with the setting "A few miles south of Soledad, The Salinas river drops in close to the hillside bank and runs deep and green. The water is warm too".

I think the author chose the place on purpose because "Soledad" means loneliness in Spanish.I maintain that the characters are going to be lonely people.

I conclude that the setting of this novel is very important to understand the book.

    1. Authors not only tell us a story with just words, but the locations, places, and characters have meaning too.

  8. After today"s lesson, I strongly believe that the setting of the novel "Of Mice and men" by John Steinbeck is very important to understand the book.

  9. Dear Givette,
I like that you have strong opinions and you are right if a writer begins a story with the setting that is a clue that the landscape of California is relevant to the story.
