Theme Statement

Dear Class,
I am so happy that we keep reading more and more stories and becoming in the process fluent readers. You did an excellent job with "Father" from "Living up the Street" by author Gary Soto. I want to ask you: what do you think is the theme of this dramatic story? What evidence can you give me that supports your statement? Why do you think the boy is reacting that way? Let me know. I can't wait to see your answers and comments!

  1. Dear teacher,
I think the theme of the story "Father" is that the loss of a parent or a relative when you are a child is devastating.
The story shows how the little boy is feeling about his loss.

  9. Dear Paola,
Thanks for your interest in our blog. I am glad that you read the story "Father" by Gary Soto. He is such a good author.
When we read a story, we as readers always make connections to our text. You asked me what are my connections to this story? Well, I have to tell you that I am very happy and lucky to have both of my parents alive. My connection to this short story was the gardening scene where Mr. Soto described the domesticity and bonding of the family.
    Thanks and Keep reading!

  10. Dear Rosiel,
Every good writer writes about topics that he knows well and is familiar.
So, in "Living up the Street" what he is doing is sharing with us moments about his life and his experiences "growing up". Even in his fiction, like in the play "Novio", I think there are autobiographical moments.

  11. Dear Jarlyn,
Of course "Father" is a tragic story. Look what the writer is doing he is sharing with us the death of his father. This is by its very nature a painful subject but he does superbly avoiding sentimentalism and cheap melodrama. Go back to the text and notice how he convey the event with three simple short sentences.
